Batbook of the Week: Batman #37

Hilarious, Adorable & Romantic.

These are the three words to best describe Batman #37. I love reading stories that don’t involve any super-villain causing some kind of catastrophe. All this issue did was focus on the double date and, it’s adorable!

Story:

The Super Couples are about to enter the fair, when they discover it’s Superhero Night. Look carefully for all of the costumed cameos you will find. Solution? Costume Change. Bruce ends up dressing as Superman, Clark dresses up as Batman, with glasses, even! I have to admit, this book had so many quotable lines but, I don’t want to spoil anything, it’s so hilarious.

Lois ends up wearing Selina’s Catwoman costume and Selina wears Lois’ date night dress. Don’t worry, there’s fan service for everyone. There comes, of course, the issue of the clothes fitting. Well...it stretches.

.

We enter the Tunnel of Love and get a look at how different the respective couples’ relationships are. Lois & Clark have been together for so long, they know how to keep things to themselves but, Bruce & Selina are still on that MOMOL (Make Out Make Out Lang) Stage, as people would call it.

After several fair activities, we see the guys and girls bond via Baseball and Alcohol, respectively. Similar questions rise such as...Why him? Why her? You’re a criminal, he’s a superhero? You’re a Superhero, she’s a criminal? Those questions, are some of the most difficult things to explain in a relationship.

How do you even explain to someone why you love someone so much in the clearest way? And, when it comes to complicated concepts like love, trust me, Tom King has that part down. Check Mister Miracle Issue 5. Seriously. Tom King is on a hot streak and, nothing can stop him.

Majority of the book is all about bonding time and, my goodness, there was a ton of that. We got to know more about Lois’ & Selina’s dad issues, well one of them has non-existent dad issues. The entire story is so mellow and, a nice break from all of the insanity that’s been going on with other Bat Stories like in Metal & Detective Comics. Heck, even the crime that happens is so mellow that the ladies start laughing, because they knew what was coming!

We need more slice of life superhero stories like these. Heck, I would love to read an entire Justice League comic where it’s just their everyday lives. That’s something worth exploring with a lot of DC Characters.

Art:

Not much to say. I loved it! What really stood out for me was how human they showed Bruce to be this regular guy with his and scars that show how human this mythological figure of Gotham truly is. For the women...who knew Lois Lane was such a stunner. Everyone knows about Selina always being drawn to be the seductive temptress but, this is the first time, I think, I’ve seen Lois drawn this way.

Side Note:

I love the little cameos by different people dressed up in their favorite DC Characters Costumes. Come on, the Wonder Twins? Schway.
