The Mystery of the Flash Scene in BvS

Batman v. Superman was highly criticized by many for having a convoluted storyline. Critics felt that some scenes did not contribute to the overall story of the movie. One of which was the dialogue between Flash and Bruce Wayne. But after seeing a bunch of Zack Snyder films, I am half convinced that every scene plays an important role in the delivery of the story.

This Flash is presumably an older version of "Present" Flash--you know, that Flash that pushes off enemies and run. Having said so, the Flash scene in BvS might have more relevance in the upcoming Justice League the movie. Many have speculated that this scene is an exit strategy for WB to integrate solo movies that can provide a different take on established characters like Superman, Batman, and/or even Wonder Woman.

But after seeing the third and final trailer for Justice League, its hard not to connect Future Flash in the said movie.

“Bruce! Listen to me right now! It’s Lois! Lois Lane! She’s the key! Am I too soon!? I'm too soon! You were right about him! You were always right about him! Fear him! Fear him and find us. You have to come find us, Bruce!”

Those were the words spoken by Future Flash before Bruce succeeded in decoding Luthor’s data. The line in itself doesn’t make a lot of sense—especially in BvS. But could we finally see its relevance in Justice League?

And the answer is a resounding yes. We could definitely see the line come to full circle in Justice League. In the latest trailer released last Sunday, we are greeted with what appears to be a smiling Clark Kent and a speechless Lois Lane. Later we find out that all of this is just a dream.

Dream sequences is a recurring theme in BvS. Zack Snyder beautifully uses the narrative to exploit the character’s inner conflicts. This was very evident in Bruce’s nightmares—his personal doubts to doing good in a world filled with darkness. So this dream sequence in the last trailer definitely shows us the struggles of Lois—finding hope in a world of grief. Not just that, but the dream also resonates how important Lois is to Clark. Before his untimely death, he told Lois that she is his world.

The latest trailer also teased us the eventual return of of Superman. We know its going to happen. But fans are more concerned about the extent of Superman’s morality and goodness upon his return.

It is not farfetched to wish for the movie adaptation of The Death and Return of Superman by Dan Jurgens and Jerry Ordway. Now, if that is the direction where the cinematic universe is heading to, then we are bound to see Superman in his black suit. While it does not hold true in the comicbook universe, there are rumors associating the black suit to an evil reincarnation of Superman. If we are to get that evil Superman, than the Justice League might get their asses whooped in the movie prompting Flash to travel back in time and warn Bruce about Superman.

While Future Flash's warning in BvS made mention of Lois Lane, it also mentioned that Bruce was right to fear "him". Whoever Future Flash was referring to, the latest trailer might have dropped some clues as to who they should fear.

At the 1:13 - 1:20 mark of the trailer, Diana asks "Invasion?" Bruce replied, "I think it's something more... something darker." It could mean Darkseid or it could mean something else. Remember, when Superman was revived in the comicbooks, his suit was described as something darker. Either way, Bruce already fears something darker. That, pretty much, is obvious. Personally, I would like to think that he fears a darker Superman.

So if we get this evil Superman, Flash's warning may finally come to a full circle in the form of Lois Lane. Is she the answer in bringing back the morally upright Superman? Is she the key Future Flash is referring to? We still have a month before we can find out. But just to clarify, this is a fan theory and it may or may not happen in the movie. Nonetheless, it is getting harder and harder to contain our excitement.

Justice League comes to theaters on November 17, 2017. Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes-Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash-it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
