Batman's favorite: Gabe's Homegrown Dishes
Have you ever experienced one of those nights when you crave for Filipino comfort food? You know, those nights after making your routinary rounds fighting crime and all you want to eat is mom’s spaghetti. If you do, you’re in luck. Gabe’s Homegrown Dishes along Katipunan Extension is the best place to satisfy that delicious food craving.
Let me say this upfront, one of the owners of the restaurant is both a comicbook enthusiast and an action figure collector. It is to no surprise that the restaurant is filled with comicbooks, art prints from local artists, and action figures. The overall ambiance of the place is perfectly compliments the comfort food that they serve.
Without dillydally, the food is amazing and Gabe's Homegrown Dishes deserve a 5-batarang rating.
To start things off, I was able to try some of their appetizers such as cropec, kwek-kwek [P45.00], fishball [P50.00], and sumpia/pritong lumpia [P100.00]. The appetizers were cooked to perfection. I'm a big fan of pritong lumpia so it was easily my favorite from the batch. No complaints with the way it was cooked and the combination of vegetables inside it.
I also recommend their Beef Tapsilog [P115.00]. The buttery taste of their rice and mildly sweetness of the egg perfectly compliments the taste of the beef. Their atchara is also good, but I was really overwhelmed with the perfect combination of the rice, egg, and beef. This is a perfect meal for Batman after a long night rounding-up villains in Manila.
What stood out for me was their Horseylog [P115.00]. Its almost the same as their beef tapsilog but instead of using beef tapa, they use horse meat. Yes, you've read that right, horse meat. Its much sweeter and more tender than the beef tapa. It was the first time for me to eat horse meat and surprisingly, it didn't have any distinct smell or taste. To be honest, if they didn't mention that it was horse meat, I would have thought it was beef tapa.
I was also told that horse meat is a delicacy in Batangas. Well, it isn't much of a surprise since the owner of the restaurant grew up in Batangas and that her favorite hobby is cooking.
Overall, Gabe's Homegrown Dishes is a perfect place to eat delicious homegrown food with the family. The interior design of the restaurant brings out the inner kid in us as you can read comics and play with action figures while waiting for your food. But most of all, Gabe's is TDKPH APPROVED! Gabe's is located at 219 KATIPUNAN AVENUE, PROJECT 4, QUEZON CITY. This is a perfect spot for Batman and the Batfamily!
